English in International Baccalaureate Programmes

International Baccalaureate Middle Year Program (IB MYP) is a part of International Baccalaureate (IB) continuum, ultimately leading to IB Diploma Programme. IB MYP curriculums are applicable for students in the age group of 11 to 16 years. IB MYP is based on six Global Contexts, which are considered as essential differentiating feature of the programme. They are not generally taught as separate courses, rather as themes that are reflected in all subjects through unit questions. It has eight subject groups,

International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB DP) programmes are internationally recognized qualifications for higher education. IB DP courses are applicable for students in the age group of 16-19 years. To clear the IB diploma programme, a candidate must comply with three core requirements, in addition to passing the subject examinations. These core requirements are, Extended Essay (ES); Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS).

What do they study?

“In this course, students will study a wide range of literary and non-literary texts in a variety of media. By examining communicative acts across literary form and textual type alongside appropriate secondary readings, students will investigate the nature of language itself and the ways in which it shapes and is influenced by identity and culture. Approaches to study in the course are meant to be wide-ranging and can include literary theory, socio-linguistics, media studies and critical discourse analysis among others”.

IB DP English A Literature

What they study?

Students will focus exclusively on literary texts, adopting a variety of approaches to textual criticism. Students explore the nature of literature, the aesthetic function of literary language and textuality, and the relationship between literature and the world.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK)

Theory of Knowledge is a mandatory subject for IB courses, in which the course allows the process of discovering and allowing the students’ views on ‘Knowledge claims’. The course uses a combination without any particular order and it revolves around-

  • Exploration of ways of knowing which are – sense perception, reason, emotion, faith, imagination, intuition, memory, and language.
  • Areas of knowledge that include – Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Human Sciences, History, Religious Knowledge Systems, Indigenous Knowledge Systems, The Arts and Ethics.

To explore perspectives considering the fallacies and biases that exists in the construction or acquisition of knowledge. It promote critical thinking and open-mindedness that shape the overall personality of the student with international mindedness in the global context.
